CD and Book Packaging

For a couple years I worked as the graphics and marketing designer for the historic Minton's in Harlem, (and The Cecil, its sister restaurant next door.) Once the stomping ground of jazz legends, and the birthplace of some of what we now think of as the American Jazz canon, Minton's was a great place to meet musicians and learn about their craft. Since then I've received a few calls to design record and CD covers, packaging and posters for independent recording artists, and those signed to boutique labels. The process of listening to tracks with the artists and trying to capture their vision for the art is interesting and different every time.

I also love designing book jackets. Most of us think of the cover when we pick up a book, but the jacket is a wonderfully complex document that needs to be cohesive even as it is viewed in pieces. In that way, album design, CD packaging and book design are similar... each segment contains different copy and visuals and its own heirarchy of information, but the user's experience must be seamless.
